PHA Issues Public Advisory for New Providence as Dorian Approaches Landfall 

The Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) wishes to advise members of the public to make use of polyclinics throughout New Providence to access care, namely the South Beach Health Centre, the Elizabeth Estates Clinic, the Fleming Street Clinic and the Flamingo Gardens Clinic.  Polyclinics will remain open to the public until 9pm Friday August 30, 2019.  The Emergency Department at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) should only be used in the event of a medical emergency. 

Emergencies are classified as the following injuries or illnesses that threaten life or limb, such as:

  • Gunshot wounds,
  • Chest Pains,
  • Head Injury,
  • Uncontrollable Bleeding,
  • Loss of Consciousness,
  • Major trauma or accident and
  • Asthma,
  • Severe allergic reaction,
  • Extensive burn injuries,
  • Fractures/broken bones,
  • Deep lacerations and cuts,
  • Obstetric Emergencies
  • Psychiatric emergencies (suicidal ideation/attempt, aggressive behaviour)

Injuries or illnesses that are non-life threatening and can wait several hours for care are considered Urgent Care conditions such as:

  • Earache,
  • Sore Throat,
  • Coughs,
  • Flus or Colds,
  • Allergies,
  • Sprains,
  • Strains

For persons unsure if they should seek care at PMH Emergency Department, please call 242.326.7014 and speak to a healthcare provider.

The Authority encourages persons on prescription medications should visit the Polyclinics to refill prescriptions, ensuring that they have a minimum of two weeks supply.  Medications should be kept safe in a waterproof container or Ziploc bag and kept in a cool dry place.

Hurricane Dorian is a major storm system presenting a significant threat to lives and property. The Authority takes this opportunity to urge the public to complete final hurricane preparations, and to pay close attention to official updates issued by the Government and its agencies to ensure the safety of family and property during this storm.
